To build a foundation for future academic and career success, students must read a widely and deeply across a variety of texts. By reading stories, plays, myths, and other fictional narratives from diverse cultures and time periods, students gain literary and cultural knowledge, as well as familiarity with literary elements and structures. By reading non-fiction texts in history, social sciences, and physical sciences, students gain knowledge in these fields that will also give them the experience to be better readers in all content areas.
Whichever piece of prose, poetry, or text they are reading, students will show a steadily growing ability to discern more from and make fuller use of text—including making connections between ideas and between different texts, considering a wider range of evidence from the text, and becoming more critical of inconsistency and effectiveness in texts. These connecting, analysing, and critical thinking skills apply broadly across many disciplines.
Through reading a diverse array of classic and contemporary literature as well as challenging informational texts, students are expected to build knowledge, gain insights, explore possibilities, and broaden their perspective of the world.
They will determine and come to understand the meanings of grade-appropriate words encountered through reading, come to appreciate the words have figurative and poetic shades of meaning, differentiate their relationships to other words, and expand their vocabulary over the course of studying textual content.
Students also develop the habits of reading independently, closely, and critically, which are essential to their future success as learners.
Our Reading Club program is dedicated to instilling in students a strong foundation of academic and literary knowledge, as well sparking the passion for learning and reading. Students in our reading program make significant gains in reading skills and reach their full potential as life-long readers.
